The island of Corfu has an area of 585 square kilometres (for comparison: Lake Constance has about 536 square kilometres), is about 62 km long - 28 km wide in the north, and 3.5 km wide at its narrowest point in the south. The second largest Ionian island, Corfu is the westernmost tip of Greece, opposite the Italian boot heel, and in the northwest, near Agios Stefanos (Sinies), it juts out to within 2 km of Albania.
Corfu has about 100,000 inhabitants, of whom about 35,000 live in the capital Kerkyra. The highest mountain of the island is the Pantokrator in the north with a height of about 906 m above sea level.
